Chapter Thirty-Seven
"You cannot stay here overnight ma'am. It's against our rules. To prevent the spread of infection, we don't allow it," said the nurse.
"Davion, I have to go home for the night. I'll come back tomorrow morning, okay?" She said gently stroking his forehead. Davion's hold relaxed and his hand fell limp at the sides of the bed. It was as if he understood the situation. Greta led Sofia away and they went home, leaving Victoria and Colton at the hospital.
Greta took care of Sofia and sent her to bed with a glass of warm milk since she didn't want to eat anything. Sofia smiled seeing her own room where she and Davion had spent the best days of their lives. After seeing Davion's reaction to her, she was convinced that his condition would improve. He would get better even if it took time and return home with her. She slept on his side of the bed, inhaling his smell, waiting eagerly for the next morning for Davion to wake up.
However the next whole week Davion didn't gain consciousness but he was aware of Sofia's presence everytime she went to visit him. The doctors were hopeful as his health was improving day by day. A week later, as Sofia sat by him, stroking his forehead lovingly, talking to him in her sweet, melodious voice, she felt his hand quiver.
"I know that you can hear me, feel me Davion. Open your eyes please. Now, you have to make an effort to get better," said Sofia, softly. His hand quivered in response and he slowly opened his eyes and blinked and closed it again.
Sofia turned to call the nurse hovering nearby. She came rushing to Davion's side when he slowly opened his eyes and looked straight at her. Sofia smiled at him with tears of happiness in her eyes as he gazed at her, his eyes flashing the pain that he might be experiencing. The nurse gave him some water and summoned the doctors to check whether his senses were functioning properly or not. But Sofia knew that he could see her, feel her, hear her perfectly. Sofia sat quietly beside him while the doctors checked him but Davion's gaze was constantly up at her as if he wanted to say so much but couldn't.
Sofia had to leave since the doctors needed to continue with his treatment. She went home feeling happier than before that Davion had opened his eyes and looked at her. "I'm glad that he has gained consciousness, Sofi, " said Victoria. "You take rest now."
Greta and Francis were at the hospital while Colton went to work for a few hours. He was too tired and overworking himself without any respite. After work, Greta sent him home to catch up on some sleep. Victoria had warmed up to him and it seemed that the enmity between them had vanished. How this miracle happened no one knew. Sofia was too wrapped up in her own world to notice anything. Her nausea was much better and the baby was growing nicely. Her last ultrasound report was normal and Sofia was overwhelmed to hear her baby's heartbeats. She just wished Davion could hear it too.
Everyday, Sofia visited Davion and spent as much time with him as was permissible. She held his hands and spoke lovingly to him, giving him hope of a better tomorrow. She talked about their baby and played the audio of their baby's heartbeats. Tears fell from Davion's eyes as he heard his baby's heartbeats. He still couldn't talk as his vocal chords had received a shock from the fall. However, after two weeks Davion had recovered fast and was shifted to a regular suite room where Sofia had the permission to stay with him. She was the happiest person in the hospital and moved in with a small bag filled with her essentials.
Although she needed to sleep beside him on a separate bed, she was happy. "You're going to be a daddy to a baby girl, Davion. What do you want to name her?" Asked Sofia, sitting beside him on his bed, holding her hand tightly in his.
Davion tried to say the words but failed. He moved his mouth but no sound came out. "Yes, Davion, you can do it. Try," said Sofia.
"Ce... ne," said Davion with a lot of effort.
"Yes, tell me, baby," prompted Sofia.
"Cele..," tried Davion and Sofia saw the tremendous effort that he was putting to say the words.
"It's okay, don't pressurize yourself. There are six months left to decide," she smiled.
"Celestine," whispered Davion with a wide smile on his face at being able to say it. Sofia stared at him with surprise, her eyes filling up with tears. Shs cradled his head gently to her chest and kissed the top of his head.
"I love the name, Davion. Celestine indeed is a heaven sent gift for us," said Sofia lovingly. Davion wrapped his arm around her body as he embedded his face into her bosom.
"I love you, Sofia, " he said as tears of joy crept into his eyes and cascaded down his cheeks.
"I love you too, Davion," she answered as they clung to each other and wept happily in each other's arms. "Quickly get better, baby so that we can go home. The physiotherapist will start to work on your legs from today," said Sofia.
"I'm better. Let's go home, please," said Davion desperately.
"Just a few days more," said Sofia, coaxing him to co-operate. The physiotherapist arrived and Sofia walked away but Davion caught her hand.
"Stay, " he pleaded with her.
"Hello, Mr Torres, I'm Terence Carter, your physiotherapist. Don't worry, your wife isn't going anywhere. I'll do a very basic therapy with you on the first day. It won't hurt at all," coaxed the therapist. Davion nodded and followed what the therapist instructed him to do. The pain in his pelvic region was excruciating and he couldn't lift his leg at all.
"I can't lift my leg at all," he said, tears forming in his eyes. Sofia stood by him, holding onto his hand. "I don't think I can ever walk again," he said brokenly.
"Of course you can but it will take time, Mr Torres. You have to follow the physiotherapy religiously. It will hurt a lot but you can't afford to give up if you want to walk again," said the therapist. Davion's hold upon Sofia's hand tightened.
"I'll do it," said Davion with a determined expression on his face.
"Good, very good. I like your spirit, Mr Torres," he said. The next whole week passed by and Davion never gave up despite the excruciating pain he felt everytime he moved his legs. He was released from the hospital and brought home. Davion was in tears overwhelmed and thankful to be alive and united with the love of his life. The last time that he was in this bedroom, he had no hopes of ever seeing Sofia in his dismal life. An attendant helped him out of his wheelchair onto the bed. Although he was better, he couldn't walk as he still hadn't gained the functionality of his legs. His pelvic bones were still recovering and couldn't take the weight of his body. He needed help for day to day activities and therefore needed a male attendant to help him with everything. With Sofia pregnant, that was the only option available. So they hired Francis's older brother, David for the job.
"I'm so glad to be back home. Thank you for coming back to me, Sofia," said Davion after everyone had left and Sofia closed the door and sat down on the bed beside him.
"What were you thinking, Davion? You don't have the right to take your life. Your life, your heart, your body, your soul are all mine. How could you even think of ending everything? I was just angry with you. If you had tried a little more, I would have given in and come back home with you. I was just testing you," she said, holding his cheek and looking into his eyes. Davion gazed back at her.
"I thought you didn't want me anymore," he said with pain etched on his face.
"Of course, I want you. You are my life, my love, the father of my baby, " she whispered, kissing his cheek. "I know everything about Nicola Drayton. Greta told me. I'm sorry for misunderstanding you, baby," she said to him.
"No, I'm sorry for misunderstanding you with that guy," said Davion with a sigh.
"Which guy?" Asked Sofia, looking at him with a bewildered expression on her face.
"I've seen you at your college many times with a guy. I've seen the same guy near our house too. I was mad with jealousy thinking that you lost your interest in me and wanted him instead," said Davion with a frown. It sounded so immature now that he thought about it. Sofia thought for a minute and then giggled.
"You mean, Caleb?" She asked with a chuckle. Davion frowned at her. So the guy was Caleb?
"His girlfriend, Tessa, is my best friend. They live two houses down this street. They help me with my studies. You have no reason to be jealous of Caleb. He's like a brother to me," she said reassuring Davion. Davion told her everything about his New York trip and about his inner turmoil about not contacting her. He told her about his mom's betrayal and how he had trust issues after that. He explained about the kiss and how he had sued the magazine for printing false news for publicity.
"It's okay, Davion. I forgive you," she told him. Davion closed his eyes feeling overwhelmed that she had forgiven him at last. He had been dying to hear them for the last few weeks. Now that he had cleared all misunderstandings between them, he could now concentrate upon getting better.
