Chapter Thirty-Five

He waited patiently after ringing the doorbell twice. It was well past dinnertime and he couldn't understand where the family could have gone. He was about to ring the doorbell again when the door opened and Victoria peeped at him with a nervous expression on her face.

"Where's Sofia?" Asked Davion impatiently.

"She doesn't want to talk to you. She's locked herself in after seeing you from her window," said scared Victoria.

"What the hell! I've been traveling all day non-stop just to see her and now she refuses to meet me?" Said Davion bitterly. Victoria looked angry at his outburst.

"Isn't that a result of your own misdeeds?" Asked Victoria with a scowl. Their mom came out and opened the door wide and smiled at him.

"Please come inside, Davion. Let's talk to Sofia. I'm sure that she'll come around," said their mom. She led him to the living room and asked Victoria to go upstairs and talk to Sofia.

Their dad too came and looked at Davion with anger. "We've sent you the divorce papers, Davion. What are you doing here? There's nothing to talk about after what you've done to my daughter. I trusted you with her," said a hurt Gregory Blakesley.

"Please, Mr Blakesley, you're accusing me falsely without giving me a chance to defend myself. I'm at fault, I accept but my only fault is misunderstanding Sofia and neglecting her for a month. I haven't betrayed Sofia, believe me," said Davion.

"I don't believe you. A picture speaks more than words do. I think you should leave, " he growled with anger. Victoria came rushing down.

"Mom, Sofia's threatening to commit suicide if Davion didn't leave now," she said, looking panicked and scared. Her mom glanced at Davion with frightened eyes.

"Oh my God! Davion I'm sorry, Sofi's in a very vulnerable state. I can't afford to lose my daughter. She's very stubborn. I know she'll do something which we'll both regret," said Sofia's mom. Davion whirled around and stormed out of the house. He would come another time when things cooled down. He drove off to his apartment not having the wish to see Colton right now. He needed to be alone for a while.

Victoria and her mom banged on Sofia's door sick with worry. "Davion has left Sofi, please open the door," yelled Victoria. After five minutes, a haggard Sofia opened the door with tears in her eyes. Their mom pulled her into her arms.

"Don't even think of pulling such a stunt, ever. You aren't alone anymore, Sofi. You have a baby growing inside you. You don't have the right to take its life before it even saw the light of the world," scolded her mom. Sofia wept brokenly.

"He betrayed my love, mom. He doesn't want me and my baby. Then why had he come here?" She said in between sobs.

"Only Davion can answer why he came here. You have to listen to what he has to say," explained her mom.

"No, I have already served him the divorce papers. I don't want anything to do with him," said Sofia vehement and aggressive, ready to fight anyone who dared to oppose.

Their mom glanced at Victoria to quieten her. "I'm sure he'll sign the papers after talking to you for the last time, " said their mom.

"I don't have anything to say to him, not even for the last time. He's welcome to have thousands of affairs. I'm done with him. I've released him," said Sofia, walking towards her en-suite as a bout of nausea again hit her.

Davion again tried to see her the whole of next week but it was the repeat of the same thing again and again. The last time, the Blakesleys hadn't even allowed him inside. Frustrated, he returned to his apartment every day. He was at his wits end already. Nine days of his twenty day time limit had been spent just trying to talk to Sofia. He had to sign the divorce papers within twenty days else he knew that Sofia would be able to proceed with the divorce as an uncontested divorce anyway. So the only way left for him was to talk her out of it and cancel the petition.

However, Sofia's condition again deteriorated and she was again admitted to the hospital. With her parents present with her all the time, it was impossible for Davion to even catch a glimpse of her. He waited outside the hospital night and day for an opportunity to talk to Sofia. It was useless talking to her family members as they hated the sight of him and avoided him like a plague. Her dad had thrown Davion out like trash the last time he had visited. Davion was lost and upset and on the verge of losing his head. He knew that he had wronged Sofia by neglecting her but apart from that he hadn't done any other crime. He hadn't betrayed Sofia and just needed a chance to explain that to her.

After three days, Sofia was released and taken back home. The next few days, Davion tried his best to approach her but when he failed to even enter her house, he broke down on her doorsteps. With only a day remaining of his time limit, he lost all hope and returned back to Reno to his empty house. Greta hadn't come as she wasn't aware of his sudden plans. Davion was thankful since he wasn't in the frame of mind to meet and talk to anyone.

The house looked desolate, cold and barren just like his life. His phone buzzed with an incoming call from Sofia's lawyer. He threatened Davion that if he didn't sign the papers and despatched them in twenty-four hours, he would proceed with the legal procedures for an uncontested divorce. Davion didn't have any reply and just heard the lawyer like a statue. After the call was disconnected, he trudged up the stairs to his bedroom where he had loved and lost the only woman he had ever cared for. He lay on the bed on the side where Sofia always slept and inhaled her sweet smell on the bed sheet, cushions, everywhere. It seemed as if she was there with him. Tears fell incessantly from his eyes while his heart constricted with pain.

A simple misunderstanding had destroyed their lives forever. There was no hope for a reconciliation. He had no hope for a better life with Sofia and his baby. They didn't need him in their lives. He was unloved, unwanted and doomed for life. All his life he had hated the word love and now when he fell in love, his only love hated him. He didn't have the wish to live anymore.

Getting up from the bed he walked towards the terrace in a daze. He had no idea where his feet were taking him to. He only knew one thing. He couldn't live after giving Sofia a divorce. He walked to the edge of the terrace and looked down at the swimming pool below. He saw his reflection there. It felt as if some strange force was beckoning him to take the plunge and end his life. Dazed and unhappy, he had reached the point of no return. Closing his eyes, he whispered hoarsely,"I love you, Sofia. I wish you a happy life. Goodbye my love."

He jumped off the terrace, falling and falling with his eyes closed as if in a trance. He could feel his dad weeping for him but he was happy. At least he would be able to unite with his dad, the only person who ever truly loved him. He fell into the shallow swimming pool and felt himself go down deep under, his pelvic bones hitting the bottom of the pool with such a force that the excruciating pain made him lose his consciousness immediately.

The tremendous splash alerted the security guards as well as Francis who had arrived to pick up Davion from the helipad. He was busy chatting with the guards after dropping Davion home and parking his car in the garage. "What was that noise? It sounded like a tsunami, " said Francis.

"Dunno, let's go and check," said the guard. They ran towards the swimming pool and found water splashed everywhere as if something huge had fallen in.

"How did so much water spill out of the pool? Did you feel any earthquakes?" Asked the guard.

Francis shook his head and walked towards the edge of the pool. He screamed with horror, seeing Davion's still body floating in the pool. How could it be when he knew  how to swim?

"Tim, hurry, Mr Torres has fallen into the pool," said Francis, climbing down into the pool. Tim, the security guard, immediately called the emergency number and went ahead to the pool to help Francis.

"He's no more, Tim," said a panicked and scared Francis who caught Davion's shoulders and tried to bring his head above the water.
