Chapter Thirty-Four
There was a strange quietness all over the house as if no one had lived here for the last few days. It was really weird and he started dreading what his heart already had started warning him. Did Sofia elope with that guy from her college? He walked into the living room in a frenzy.
"Greta!" He yelled, searching frantically for her. He looked into the kitchen, the laundry room yet Greta wasn't around. He was about to storm upstairs when he saw Greta enter the house with an important looking, huge envelope in her hand.
"Where were you?" Demanded Davion. Greta looked at him with a confused look on her face.
"I was coming back from the departmental store when this arrived via courier, " said Greta handing him the envelope.
"What's this?" Asked Davion with a frown on his face. Greta shrugged.
"I don't know," she said.
"Where's Sofia? Isn't she at home?" Asked Davion, looking around. Greta looked at him with an incredulous look on her face.
"You don't know that she has left?" She asked, her eyes wide with disbelief. Davion's mouth hung open with shock.
"Left? Where? I knew it, I knew that she couldn't be trusted. I shouldn't have married her in the first place. So she did elope with that son of a b*tch, right?" Said a furiously shaking Davion. His knuckles were white with fury as he clenched his hands tightly into fists. The envelope had already fallen from his hands with shock. Greta picked it up and kept it on the coffee table and turned to him, her face red with fury too.
"What are you talking about Davion? Whom would she elope with? Do you have any idea what you are saying? Sofia's pregnant with your baby and had been extremely sick for the past whole month. She could hardly get up from bed and eat, let alone elope. But you wouldn't know anything since you've never cared enough to find out what was going on," scolded Greta. Davion looked like a ghost, the color draining from his face.
"Sofia's pregnant? I .. but.. she never told me," he said with a lost expression on his face.
"Did you care to find out? Were you home? Victoria and I summoned the doctor and took care of her but you should be happy that she has left you forever," said Greta, wiping her eyes. Davion staggered to a nearby couch and slumped into it.
"She's left me forever? Why? I'm sorry that I misunderstood her but we're still married. Why would she leave me?" Asked Davion in a tortured voice.
"You know what you've done, Davion. You've betrayed her," said Greta, shaking her head.
"I didn't take good care of her and I'm sorry for that. I'll apologize for misunderstanding her and bring her back. She must have gone back to her parents in Las Vegas," said Davion, picking up his luggage and walked towards the front door, ready to leave for Las Vegas.
"She'll never come back, Davion. You should have thought about it before entertaining other women behind her back. Don't forget that you're still married to Sofia. If you continue with your ways, it is called betrayal, " pointed out Greta. Davion looked at her with disbelief.
"What betrayal are you talking about? I haven't done anything since the day I saw Sofia. I left all my reckless ways behind and have remained true to Sofia, " said Davion, looking hurt and lost. Greta stomped off to the magazine rack and pulled out the issue of The Metropolitan. Flicking through the pages, to page 30, she walked back to Davion and handed it to him.
"What in the name of God is this then, Davion? The picture clearly shows you and that woman kissing one another. There's an article on the two of you enjoying each other's company all throughout the inauguration party. Tell me it's not true now. Tell me that you haven't betrayed Sofia. Shouldn't Sofia, as your legally wedded wife have attended the event instead of her?" Asked Greta. She looked furious with Davion.
Davion stared at the picture with surprise. How could they print this picture? He had no idea when they had clicked this one. The kiss didn't mean a thing. Nicola was a reckless, foul-mouthed, spoiled brat of a woman and Davion had never liked her. Nicola had always loved Bryan Kingsley, the spoiled son of a multi-billionaire. Bryan didn't return her feelings which made Nicola all the more determined to win him over.
So seeing her crush, Bryan at the party, Nicola had kissed Davion suddenly to get her crush jealous. Davion was too stunned to react but then it worked for Nicola as Bryan started seeing red. Later Davion found out that the stunt had made Bryan confess his feelings for Nicola. She was ecstatic with happiness and had thanked Davion again and again later. Davion hadn't given it much thought since he had never bothered with the gossip columns but now he realized how that little untrue writeup that had been published without his knowledge had affected his life. Sofia had misunderstood him and was gone forever.
"It's not what you're thinking, Greta. I went to New York to help the Drayton's with their business. Peter Drayton had a cardiac arrest and Nicola needed my help. The inauguration party wasn't pre-planned at all. Nicola was there as my business partner, not as anything else," explained Davion, looking like a maniac. "I didn't kiss Nicola, I swear on my unborn baby," he said in the same tone. Greta stared at his wild eyes and felt more concerned about him than anything else.
"Okay, I've got it Davion. Calm down," she said, trying to calm him.
"No, I'll sue the magazine for publishing a false article on me, " said Davion, picking up his phone. Greta shook her head, too confused to think straight. She knew that Davion never lied. If he said that he didn't kiss the Nicola woman, she believed him. But would Sofia believe him so easily? She took her shopping bags to the kitchen. There was no food at home since Sofia had left so Greta had to arrange for everything when she rejoined work. She could hear Davion agitatedly yelling at his lawyer and sighed.
Davion disconnected the call and sat slumped onto his couch. Holding his head in his hands, he felt all the energy drain out of his body. His heart broke thinking about how Sofia might have felt seeing the article about him. "I wish I had talked to you, Sofia," he said as tears fell from his eyes. He picked up his mobile and called Sofia but her phone seemed to be switched off. He tried again and again but couldn't get through. It seemed as if she had purposely switched off her mobile.
"What do I do?" He mumbled, closing his eyes. He called Colton.
"Yes, bro," came Colton's nervous voice.
"You knew that Sofia left me and yet you didn't consider it necessary to inform me," he said in a hurt tone. Colton licked his dried lips.
"I'm here at Las Vegas, bro. I've been asking Victoria to convince Sofia to return to you butbit seems that Sofia doesn't want to," said Colton, feeling sad for his friend.
"She doesn't want to come back to me?" Asked Davion in a whisper. "I'm coming down to Las Vegas to talk to her and bring her back with me," said Davion, disconnecting the call. He got up to inform Greta that he would be going to Las Vegas right away. He wouldn't return till he was able to convince Sofia that he truly loved her.
"I'll win you over and bring you back, Sofia," he swore in his mind. However his eyes fell upon the white envelope that Greta brought with her. Out of curiosity, he picked it up and checked it minutely. It was addressed to him. He tore open the envelope and pulled out an important looking legal document from inside. Opening it, he was shocked to see that Sofia's lawyer had served him with divorce papers! He noted that Sofia had already signed the papers.
"I won't sign. I won't give you a divorce. I love you, God dammit," he said, looking lost and confused. He called the lawyers who had sent the papers to him. He learnt that he had twenty days to sign and return the documents.
He sat down on the sofa and kept thinking what to do. He couldn't let Sofia walk out of his life with his baby. He had to bring them back. He called his pilot to keep his helicopter ready. In an hour he was on his way to Las Vegas. He would never give Sofia a divorce, she was his for life. He would apologize to her, beg on his knees if the need arose. He would try to clear the misunderstandings but he wouldn't sign the divorce papers.
He reached Las Vegas and straight away drove to Sofia's house. "I'll never give you up, Sofia," he kept mumbling in his mind.
