Chapter Twenty-One

Victoria sat quietly in the lobby outside the ICU, her whole body exhausted and sleepy. She hadn’t eaten anything and her head was reeling. After saying those cruel words to her, Colton had disappeared somewhere. Anyway, she didn’t have the energy to face him again.  Finally, unable to stay awake any longer, Victoria lay her tired head on the wall behind her and closed her eyes, dozing off to sleep.

After saying those hurtful words to her, Colton’s heart broke seeing her pale and shocked face. He hadn’t planned to say anything to her but somehow the words spewed out like venom from his mouth. They hurt him more than they hurt her and he couldn’t go back to the lobby and face her. It was quite late when he went back. He saw her tired body sleeping on the chair awkwardly. Feeling extremely remorseful, he walked up to her and stood in front of her. Why did he have to love her so much that her rebuff had to hurt him the most? Why did he love such a woman who hated him? He lifted his fingers and touched her cheek.

“I’m sorry, Victoria. Please forgive me if you can. I’m dying because of you and it hurts like hell to see that you don’t return the feelings that I have for you,” he whispered, kneeling down in front of her.

“I’m sorry, Colton, “ mumbled Victoria in her sleep. Colton froze hearing her. Was she awake? Did she hear his confession? He waited with bated breath but Victoria didn’t open her eyes and it seemed that she was really asleep. Colton called Francis to send Victoria to Davion’s home. She looked too tired.

He walked away Francis arrived. “Wake her up and take her to Davion’s house, Francis, “ he instructed him.

“Okay,” said Francis. After Colton left, Francis woke Victoria who opened her sleepy eyes and gaped at Francis.

“Ma’am,  Greta asked me to take you home. Colton is here, so you can rest and come back tomorrow,” said Francis.

“Are you sure?” asked Victoria hesitantly. She just couldn’t sit through any longer. “Are you sure Colton won’t mind if I went away?” asked Victoria worriedly.

“No, ma’am. He wants you to go home, “ said Francis. Victoria nodded and got up and staggered after him. Colton watched her quietly, wanting to just storm towards her and pull her into his arms, kiss her and beg for forgiveness. After she went, he went back to the lobby to spend the rest of the night there.

The next day, when Victoria and Sofia went to the hospital, Colton had gone to work. “He’ll fall ill if this goes on. He should have gone home and slept a little,” said Greta, shaking her head but Colton was stubborn and he didn’t listen to anyone. The whole day Victoria spent at the hospital. Sofia came and left, she wasn’t allowed to stay longer as she wasn’t well. In the evening, Colton came straight from the hospital.

“Go home Colton. Eat and go to sleep. You can come tomorrow. Francis is staying the night,” said Greta.

“I can stay back. It’s no big deal for me,” said Colton, stubbornly. “Anyway I don’t feel like cooking anything for myself. I’ll eat at the cafeteria here and spend the night on the chair, “ said Colton with a shrug.

“Vicky, will you go with him?” asked Greta. “I haven’t made dinner yet,” said Greta. Victoria nodded quietly and walked away towards Colton’s car. There had been a huge change in her after hearing Colton’s rude words. The cheerfulness, the energy, the zeal to live had been wrenched out of her. She felt like she was some cheap trashy girl, fit to be Colton’s plaything. She was determined that once Davion was well, she would go away go away forever and never set foot on Reno. She would go away, far away from Colton and his life.

“You don’t need to if you don’t want to,” said Colton gruffly, walking after her. Victoria didn’t say a word. She quietly stood beside the car and waited for him to unlock the passenger door. Colton noticed that she avoided looking at him even. Her warm eyes looked sad, dull and her drooping shoulders lacked the zeal or confidence that she used to possess. “I’ll drop you at Davion’s house,” he persisted just to make her talk but she didn’t. She just sat looking outside as if she hadn’t heard a word he said to her. “Damn!” he muttered. Still no answer. He reached Davion’s house and stopped the car. “You can leave,” he told her grimly.

“No,” said Victoria, turning towards him for a brief second and then looking away. Colton sighed and drove home. He parked the car and climbed out, following Victoria towards the elevators. When the door opened, Victoria followed him inside and stood in a corner, staring at the ground. Colton watched her with frustration, feeling like tearing his hair off for hurting her. The elevator doors slid open and Victoria walked outside. She walked straight towards the kitchen when Colton opened the door of his apartment. Colton followed her and stood at the door, watching her.

“I’ll freshen up in a minute,” he said but Victoria didn’t respond in any way. She started making dinner right away. Sighing, Colton walked over to his room to take a shower. After twenty minutes, he felt refreshed and changed into a pair of sweatpants and a tee-shirt and went outside towards the kitchen. However, he was surprised to see that Victoria had left already after making him his food. She finished making dinner in twenty minutes? He walked to the dining room and saw that she had laid the table for one. Opening the casseroles, he found that she had made Angel Hair Pasta, Lime Garlic Chicken and sautéed mixture of vegetables. He ran outside and downstairs, but she had already left. He ran out of the building and to his utmost relief he saw her walking away.

“Victoria, wait,” he yelled, running towards her. Victoria froze and stopped, turning to look back. She had thought that she would be able to get away but no, she wasn’t that lucky ever.

“Where are you going? Come and eat with me,” he insisted. Victoria shook her head and ran to Davion’s house. Colton chased her and soon caught up with her. He caught her hand tightly to stop her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean a word I said yesterday. Please come and eat with me,” he begged.

“I’m not hungry,” she told him, extracting her hand and walking away, not even looking back once. Colton went home dejectedly cursing himself for reacting to her the way he had. The next day he had to go to work and by the time he went to the hospital, Victoria had left. Colton was sent home since Greta was staying the night at the hospital. Davion was still unconscious but since he was responding to Sofia’s presence, the doctors were hopeful that he would regain consciousness soon. Colton went to his house and was surprised to find that just like last evening, Victoria had cooked for him and laid the table for him. He opened the casseroles and found Beef Tortellini and Garlic Bread.

The next day he rushed to the hospital, determined to meet Victoria but strangely she didn’t arrive. In the afternoon, he received a call from his manger and had to rush. Greta and Sofia  had come over to relieve him but not Victoria. Frustrated, he left for work. When he returned home, it was very late. Greta informed him that Francis was there so he just went home. Just as he had expected, he found that Victoria had cooked for him, delicious Shepherd’s Pie and Condensed Milk Bread.

This continue for the whole week and by the time it was Friday, Colton went crazy to just talk to Victoria and get a glimpse of her. He felt extremely guilty and heartbroken for having hurt her. This was the worst punishment possible and he couldn’t take it anymore. So he returned early from work and waited for Victoria to come over to his house to cook. He would catch her today. He had to or he would go crazy. After waiting impatiently for an hour, finally the main door opened and Victoria walked inside. Greta might have told her his security code. She walked quietly towards the kitchen without looking anywhere. Colton’s heart skipped a beat seeing her. He lost all his senses and stormed into the kitchen. Startled, Victoria whirled around and her eyes widened seeing him. Colton walked up to her determinedly. His hand shot out and caught her by the arm. Pulling her into his arms, flush against his body, he caught her head and smashed his lips to hers in a hungry yet punishing kiss. Victoria gasped with surprise and shock but Colton was relentless. His punishing tongue plunged into her sweet mouth and he deepened the kiss.
