Chapter Three – Zed Is Back For Revenge
The girls trembled in fear inside the apartment as the doorbell pealed repeatedly. Liana had no idea how Dana and Fiona knew how dangerous they were. As far as she remembered, she hardly updated them about the happenings of last night. In fact, they didn’t even know she had a boyfriend!
None of them spoke a word.
After five minutes, when they didn’t leave, Liana took out her mobile phone to call the cops. However, her hands trembled and not a word came out of her mouth.
“I’ll lodge a complaint,” said Dana, taking Liana’s phone.
She lodged a complaint and disconnected the call. Yet she gaped at the phone with a frown on her face.
“Liana, I think your phone is being tapped!” With the door on the verge of being broken into, Liana couldn’t concentrate on anything else.
“Tapped? Are you sure?” asked Fiona with wide eyes.
“Yes. Liana, where were you last night?”
Liana focused her attention on her roommates, too confused by everything around her.
“God! Why can’t someone stop them? Can’t they just leave? We won’t open the door. Did you lodge a complaint? Why don’t have the cops arrived yet?”
There was a commotion outside and a loud tap on the door.
“I’ll check!” said Dana, going to peer through the eyehole. She checked and breathed a sigh of relief.
“The cops are here.” The others rushed to the door as Dana opened it. However, their faces paled to see the officer chuckling with the group of boys instead of arresting them. They glared at Liana, who hid behind Dana. She didn’t have the courage to face them at all.
“What’s going on here? Please sort this out amicably. The police have other important work to take care of.” The officer looked annoyed at being summoned while the boys stood with smug expressions on their faces. It was clear they had a good understanding with the officer.
“Officer, they have been harassing us for the last ten minutes, banging on our door. This is a security breach. Isn’t it your duty to stop the harassment?” said Dana, annoyed by the officer’s attitude.
“No, it’s not. This is a lover’s tiff and I’m won’t intervene. Sort it out between yourselves.” The cop shook hands with Zed and walked away towards the elevator, leaving the three girls to face eleven rowdy boys.
Dana tried hard to close the door, but the boys held on, preventing her.
“Get lost, fuckers!” she yelled while the other two pitched in. Yet they couldn’t close the door. Zed and his gang chuckled at their inability.
“Look, we will go away. Just hand over the bitch to us.” He gestured towards Liana who cowered behind the door.
“No, go away.” She trembled in fear since they were no match against the eleven crowding outside their door.
“I’m calling at the police station,” said Fiona, but they howled with laughter.
One of them lunged forward to grab her wrist and pull her out of the place. Fiona screamed in panic, but the guy roared with laughter.
“The cops won’t harm us. My dad is a cop,” he laughed more.
Zed pushed Dana away and barged in to grab Liana, who ran towards her bedroom. They screamed for help, but there was no one around to help them. The floor was vacant since their neighbors moved away last month. Zed outran her and grabbed her in a split second, dragging her out by her hair.
Liana cried out in pain, begging him to stop.
“I’m sorry. Please let me go.”
Zed verbally abused her as he dragged her outside the apartment.
“It’s time to continue where we left off last night. How can I leave you? You attacked me last night, remember? Did you think I’d let you go? There’s no one to save you now.”
“What the fu*k is going on here? Arrest them, Officer!” A thundering voice boomed just as the elevator stopped at their floor.
Startled, they whirled around and gaped at Axel Bancroft, marching towards them with their team of cops. The police officers rushed forward to arrest the boys, who had nowhere to escape. Zed released Liana and looked for a way to escape. He couldn’t figure out how his uncle knew about his whereabouts. Liana and the girls rushed into their apartment and trembled in fear.
Axel Bancroft stopped in front of his nephew and slapped him across his cheek, leaving his imprint on his features.
“Zed, I’m ashamed to call you my nephew. Arrest him too, Officer. I’ll forward the evidence to you. I want them punished so that they think twice before doing such crimes in the future.”
The boys hung their heads in shame as the cops shoved them towards the elevator.
“I’m sorry, uncle Axe. Please don’t get me arrested!” cried Zed, his demeanor totally transformed now.
“Rot in prison for a week. I’ll slap a non-bailable offense on all of you. Let’s see how you guys roam around free.”
They all cried for mercy, but it was a word missing from Axel Bancroft’s dictionary. The cops took them away, and he slowly turned his attention on a trembling Liana.
“You’re coming with me, Liana.”
She gaped at him, confused by his announcement.
“T-thank you for saving us, Mr. Bancroft. These are my flat mates, Dana and Fiona.” He nodded at her companions, who looked equally shaken up.
“I’m Axel Bancroft. Won’t you invite me inside?” he asked Dana, who was the oldest of them all.
“Yes. Please come inside, Mr. Bancroft. Thank you for your help.” They allowed him into their humble apartment, but Axel seemed to have other plans of his own. He looked around the place while the three girls stood watching him.
“Which is your room, Liana?”
She pointed at the tiny room on the right, and Axel marched into it. A gasp escaped Liana’s lips, realizing the mess it was in. Her roommate, Jessica, always left it that way, and it was on her to tidy the place up.
“Mr. Bancroft, please.” She tried to stop him, but he had already gone in.
“Pack up all your stuff, Liana. You won’t return to this place.”
“I’m fine here, Mr. Bancroft. This has been my home for the last two years.” She stood her ground, not needing his pity. She was thankful he had saved her, but she wouldn’t live on his charity.
He grunted in annoyance and glanced at her flat mates. “Can you help me pack up her things? If she stays here, your lives will also be threatened. Zed will be back after a week for his revenge. No one knows him better than I do.”
Dana and Fiona’s eyes widened with apprehension. “I’ll help you, Mr. Bancroft.” Dana walked inside and pulled out Liana's suitcase to dump her stuff.
“But why do I need to pack up everything? Can’t I come back when the threat is over?” she pleaded, but Axel Bancroft turned a deaf ear to her protests.
“Stop Liana. Shouldn’t we be grateful to Mr. Bancroft for saving us on time?” said Fiona as she helped her friend with the packing.
“Yes, I am.”
“Mr. Bancroft, how did you know we needed help?” asked Dana.
Axel hesitated and shrugged. “I have my ways.”
Thankfully Dana didn’t prod further and Axel watched a flustered Liana finally give in to his demand and help too. They zipped up everything and Axel took out his phone to call his bodyguards.
Within minutes, two tall and muscular bodyguards appeared to tow away their luggage.
“Come on, Liana. I don’t have all day.” Axel walked out of the door while Liana hugged her flat mates for the last time.
“You haven’t told us you knew Axel Bancroft,” whispered Fiona, feeling a tinge of jealousy.
“I didn’t get the chance. I don’t know him. He just saved me last night from a sticky situation. That’s all.”
“Oh, where were you last night? How did you land up being Zed’s girlfriend?” asked Dana curiously.
“Liana!” Axel’s impatient voice echoed on the floor and Liana panicked.
“I’ll drop by when things cool down. Sorry, I’ve got to go now.”
“We’ll vacate this apartment soon. It’s not safe for us too,” said Dana.
“Oh, I’ll call you later. Bye, take care.”
She rushed out to see Axel in the elevator, frowning at his phone. He might be furious at her to keep him waiting.
“I’m sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Bancroft.”
He grunted in response, still staring at his phone, which kept on buzzing. The elevator stopped, and he grabbed hold of Liana’s hand, pulling her along towards his car parked in front. A bodyguard opened the door for them and Axel shoved her inside. Soon they were strapped and racing towards his house.
Axel grunted in exasperation, accepting the phone call at last.
“Yes, Andrew! I know what I did. Zed is in prison on charges of attempting ra*e, security breach, harassing girls, and many others. His crime is non-bailable and I wouldn’t be able to do a thing here. I’m ashamed to call him my nephew. So don’t expect any help from me.”
A heated argument ensued while Liana sat feeling guilty for causing him problems. “I’m leaving for Toronto tonight. You can figure this out by yourself.”
They reached his house, and he dropped her along with her luggage. “Don’t go out anywhere until my return.” With that, the car sped away towards the airport, leaving her gaping at him.
